Three-dimensional analysis of craniofacial asymmetry and integrated, modular organization of human head

چکیده
To achieve craniofacial symmetry is one of the important goals of orthodontic and orthognathic treatment planning. With the increasing popularity of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in recent years, it is frequently considered for three-dimensional evaluation of craniofacial asymmetry. Currently, there are no published reviews reporting craniofacial modularization to explain the aggravated asymmetry from the upper to lower face. This review highlights the characteristics of craniofacial asymmetry; the covariance and integration of the brain, cranium, and face; and the evolutionary development pattern of craniofacial modularization. In addition, the relationship between the brain and the facial midline is discussed in this context. We have proposed a new method to determine the midsagittal plane and three-dimensional analysis of craniofacial asymmetry using the bilateral hemisphere midline structure (cerebral falx) as a reference plane. The cerebral falx is a dura mater separating the cerebral hemispheres and a potential gold standard midline reference for assessing the brain midline shift during computed tomography (CT).

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is an osseous growth dis-order, producing immature bone and characte-rized by the replacement of normal bone with fibro-osseous connective tissue. It is a bone dys-plasia that has the potential to cause significant cosmetic and functional disturbances, particularly in the craniofacial skeleton. Cra-niofacial fibrous dysplasia is one of the three types of polyostotic fibro...
متن کاملCongenital Muscular Torticollis Concurrent With Sagittal Synostosis: A Case Report
Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) and craniosynostosis are diseases that cause plagiocephaly and craniofacial asymmetry in children. In our literature review, we did not find any report of concurrent manifestation of CMT and craniosynostosis. A 41-month-old boy visited our hospital with left torticollis, right laterocollis, and craniofacial asymmetry as the main findings. During clinical ex...

متن کاملThree-Dimensional Analysis of Nasal Symmetry Following Primary Correction of Unilateral Cleft Lip Nasal Deformity.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate nasal symmetry using three-dimensional photogrammetry following primary tip rhinoplasty with or without an internal splint in patients with unilateral complete cleft lip/palate. DESIGN We captured three-dimensional images of patients with unilateral complete cleft lip/palate who underwent nasolabial repair by rotation-advancement of the lip and primary tip rhinoplast...
متن کاملComparison of the mandibular hinge axis in adult patients with facial asymmetry with and without posterior unilateral crossbite.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Although it has been suggested that adult patients with facial asymmetry with posterior unilateral crossbite (PUXB) may have a more tilted mandibular hinge axis (MHA) than those without PUXB, whether craniofacial morphology is associated with the MHA remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare the craniofacial morphology and MHA in adult subjects with post-gr...
